2008 Jan. Campout

Friday Night in the Lean-To

What a concept to be in a lean-to in January and not need to be wearing all your winter gear! The lean-to's have a nice rubberized tarp that drops down over the open wall and a stove in the middle that heats up water and Scouts quite nicely!

Saturday Morning Breakfast Preparations

Our Grub Chief is finally able to eat breakfast.

Saturday Morning Breakfast

Mountainman Breakfast, what a treat!

Our Lean-to

The Art Wood Lean-to is tucked way in the back of camp, where only a few of us hiked to during Summer Camp.

Art Wood Lean-to

Since the lean-to was not insulated the efficiency of the stove was not very good, but it was still nice and toasty in there for most of the evening, a lot of fun in the cold winter air!

Hiking to find Orienteering Points

We hiked some trails we had not taken during summer camp to go to the back of the shotgun range and to find some Orienteering Points.

The rocket!

We found the rocket that was lost near the rifle range during summer camp. This rocket still helped him earn the Space Exploration Merit Badge, even though it was lost.

Vertigo Test

How many times can you spin in a circle while looking at the top of the pole, then drop the stick and jump over it, all without falling?

Skipping stones

A favorite pasttime of many young men, skipping stones over the water and onto the ice was an especially nice treat!

Find thos Orienteering Points

The Hammerhead Sharks Patrol Leader was quite astute at leading his patrol from point to point along the permanent Orienteering Course at the camp.

Along the Trail

Hiking the main trails at Schoellkopf.

The crew

Overall we had 9 Scouts attend the campout, two of which are not pictured here as they arrived after this photo was taken..

Great scenery

The stream has been here for quite some time, carving a picturesque landscape through the camp.

Sledding!?!?

The primary plan of the campout was to go sledding at the Shotgun Range. We tried it without snow, but the results weren't that favorable. However we did play frisbee and baseball, so all was not lost!

Curses, Foiled Again!

Nobody was cursing after eating this delicious meal, a new Troop favorite, foil dinners. Is mine done yet?

Eating our dinner

What luxurious accomodations, eating in our warm lean-to on a picnic table while the leaders read the morning paper the Ranger brought to us!

Bunking Down

Don't be fooled by this photo. Just because they are in their sleeping bags doesn't mean they went to sleep. In fact Mafia was played for a couple of hours before they went to sleep.

Morning Frost

Sunday morning brought frost to our camp, but it was still not enough to use the sleds. Wishful thinking, perhaps next time!
